Bombay and Asian Self
In the UK, in GCCF all self coloured cats are recognised in the Asian group, these can be anything from a pure black (the Bombay) to cream and torties, unlike the other registries where the Bombay is the only colour that has been developed. An Asian self is a solid coloured cat that is known as full expression which means that the colour is deeper and richer than that of their Burmese cousins and a self kitten is born the same colour as it will be as an adult.
The Asian Variant is a solid coloured cat in any colour except black that is a paler shade than the Self. The colour develops as they mature very much like their Burmese cousins and an adult Variant will look just like a Burmese. They are enchanting cats that can be used as part of an Asian breeding programme as they have exactly the same parentage as any Asian and can shown as Pedigree Pets.
The Pedigree Pet classes have been recently introduced into GCCF shows and allow variants to be shown where they can win Master Cat certificates and work their way to a Master, Grand Master and Imperial Grand Master titles. The Pedigree Pet classes are classified by coat length, colour and markings and an Asian variant is classified as a Self with or without white. Cats are entered with their pet not registered name and those winning Open kitten classes or Master certificates are eligible to enter the Supreme cat show. Pedigree Pets do not have a standard of points but are judged on condition and temperament; if all the cats in the class are in tip-top sparkling condition and purring their heads off, the winner is the one the judge likes best on the day.
